Gili Meno, the laid-back, remote escape you need
Gili Meno, being the quietest island, allows you for some much needed disconnection from the world to curl up with a good book by the sea. Often overlooked, the smallest and most quiet island still has a lot to offer – from vast marine biodiversity and underwater statues, to saltwater lakes, mangrove forests, and secluded beaches to relax in.
Gili Meno – Guide & Insights
Accommodation
Gili Meno has less accommodation available than the other Gili Islands, but still has options to choose from, such as affordable luxury resorts, gorgeous bungalows with swimming pools; moreover, you are never more than a 10-minute walk to the coast.
Culinary
Although there is an absence in the variety of restaurants and cafés around Gili Meno, there are a number of modest family-run warungs and food carts along the street. There are few warungs near where the docks, but the hidden gems are found deeper into the island.
Activities
Many recommend snorkeling in Gili Meno, but the best reason is sea turtle spotting due to how quiet the island is in the absence of boats and ferries. The Turtle Sanctuary present on the island is a conservation center to safely care for the eggs prior to releasing the newborns out to the ocean. There is also a giant saltwater lake surrounded by a mangrove forest on the west side of Gili Meno for a peaceful walk around the area.
Transportation
The Gilis are an easy place to relax in – with no loud and motorized vehicles such as cars or motorbikes, you are able to explore the small islands on foot. It’s not every day that you wake up to living on a small and sparsely inhabited island. Alternatively, you are able to rent a bike for a cheap fee to be used all day, and there are cidomo (horse-drawn carriages) to take you around as well, commonly found in Lombok.
